Open Call for Choreographers

Open Call for Choreographers

ABOUT

Boston-based contemporary dance company Jessie Jeanne & Dancers (JJ&D) announces an open call for submissions from New England based choreographers. The company will identify a choreographer from the pool of applicants who will have an opportunity to create an original work on company dancers during JJ&D’s fall 2017 season. The commissioned work will be performed in a November showcase of Live Arts Boston grantees in Boston, and will tour to London in 2018. The selected choreographer will participate in an intensive-format residency during the months of September or October 2017. During the residency, the selected choreographer will be provided with nine three-hour creative periods with the company to create, develop, and set new choreographic material. The chosen choreographer will receive an honorarium of no less than $1000. The top three finalists will be showcased on JJ&D’s website and social media.

Live Arts Boston (LAB) is designed to respond directly to the needs articulated by Boston's arts community through Boston Creates. LAB provides critically needed, flexible, project-specific grants to Greater Boston’s performing artists and small nonprofit performing arts organizations to create, produce or present artistic work for Greater Boston audiences. To learn more about this grant program, go to http://www.tbf.org/lab.

JJ&D was included in WBUR’s Top 3 Dance Events To See in Boston with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Dance Cartel in April 2017 http://www.wbur.org/artery/2017/04/27/dance-company-weekend-preview.

JJ&D (http://www.jessiejeanneanddancers.com) is a rigorous creative laboratory and performance collaborative for visceral and somatic research, via contemporary dance making practices. We value audacity and somatic awareness. Through creative process we traverse cultural and interpersonal boundaries, unearthing new pathways of communication and connection. We have a commitment to commissioning local, national, and international dance choreographers to set original works on New England-based dancers, striving always to work with one established and one emerging choreographer each season in an effort to fortify the dance economy.

REQUIREMENTS

JJ&D is committed to working with artists of diverse experience and backgrounds, and will utilize this application process as a way to discover and help develop voices in dance. We invite choreographers to put forward a proposal for a new work for eight women, highlighting a particular aspect of feminism and/or identity: directly or indirectly, in process or product.

  • Be set on all JJ&D company members: http://www.jessiejeanneanddancers.com/dancers

  • Be a completed work by the end of the residency period

  • Demonstrate thorough research of the piece’s conceptual underpinning via any historical, social, political, or philosophical source material.

  • Be rigorously researched through the body before and during the creative residency.

  • Take risks choreographically and presentationally.

  • Resonate with JJ&D’s mission and values: http://www.jessiejeanneanddancers.com/mission-history

  • Embody values of rigour, relevance, audacity, and progressivity through our work, opening up dialogue across cultural, social, and political boundaries.

  • Commitment to using our work to promote positive change within ourselves and our audiences.

  • Produce socially relevant pieces of dance performance, and to locate those choreographers whose artistic profiles echo our desire, inviting them into creative dialogue that stems from a deeply human place.
